Central Bank of India Promotion: Clerk to Assistant Manager and Scale I to V — Eligibility, Channels and Test Pattern

Central Bank of India runs one combined promotion exercise each autumn. It covers clerks moving to Assistant Manager (JMG Scale I) and officers moving from Scale I up to Scale V, with a common online test date in late November.

Two features stand out. Officers can take a Written Test Channel after 3 years, but only if they hold CAIIB. And the clerk-to-officer test is published in unusual detail: 100 marks plus a 25-mark interview, with pass marks for each part.

This guide is based on the bank’s own circulars for the 2025-26 cycle, with the dates reported for the most recent round.

⚡ Quick Answer

Clerk → Assistant Manager: graduates after 2 years’ service with JAIIB/CAIIB, or 3 years without; 100-mark online test (Banking 70, Computer/CBS 15, English 15) plus a 25-mark interview; pass 50% in the test, 30% in the interview, 50% overall (45/25/45 for SC/ST) · Officers, Scale I → V: Written Test Channel after 3 years in scale (CAIIB mandatory) or Normal Channel after 5 years (4 with CAIIB) · Latest test: 23 November 2025, as reported.

  • Staff Circular 1587, 9 October 2024: Promotion process from JMG Scale I to MMG Scale II, II to III, III to SMG IV and IV to V (Mainstream) 2025-26, under the Career Path-cum-Promotion Policy for Officers (Staff Circular 1394, 25.09.2023).
Both were published with Bankersadda’s report. We cite them rather than link the PDFs because those copies are watermarked with individual employees’ names. The dates for the 2025 round are as reported by Adda247; we have not seen that year’s circulars.

The promotion calendar

2025-26 (circulars of 9 Oct 2024)9–15 Oct 202418 Oct 202423 Nov 20241 Apr 2025
2026-27 (as reported)17–20 Oct 202522 Oct 202523 Nov 2025 (tentative)1 Apr 2026

The pattern is consistent: applications in mid-October and the test on or around 23 November. If it holds, the 2027-28 round would open around mid-October 2026; that’s our projection, so check HRMS. Vacancies are announced separately from the circulars. Officers retiring before the eligibility date can’t apply, and neither can staff on sabbatical leave.

Clerk to Assistant Manager (JMG Scale I)

Confirmed clerical staff who aren’t debarred under the policy can apply if they meet the service rule:

  • Graduates with JAIIB or CAIIB: 2 years’ continuous service, counted from the start of clerical probation.
  • Graduates without JAIIB or CAIIB: 3 years’ continuous service.

Service is counted up to 1 April of the year for which the process is run. JAIIB or CAIIB must be held by the date of application.

PartMaximum marksMinimum to qualify
Online test: Banking etc.7050% of the 100 together (45% SC/ST)
Online test: Computer / CBS knowledge15
Online test: English15
Interview2530% (25% SC/ST)
Aggregate12550% (45% SC/ST)

The test is objective and online. The 70-mark banking portion covers:

  • banking theory and practice;
  • deposits and loans;
  • foreign exchange;
  • the bank’s routine and procedures;
  • banking-industry matters;
  • Central Bank’s staff-loan and welfare schemes, service conditions and disciplinary procedures.

Candidates can answer that portion in English or Hindi.

From those who clear the test, the bank calls 1.5 times the number of vacancies to interview, in order of merit. The final merit list is drawn on the 125-mark aggregate, and promotions go down it up to the number of vacancies.

Promotees can be posted anywhere in India. Applicants list up to 10 preferred regions, and some groups get priority for their preferred region or zone:

  • employees with a benchmark disability, or caring for a dependant with one;
  • promotees with three years or less to retirement;
  • women joining a spouse or family;
  • ex-servicemen.

Everyone else is placed by inter-se seniority.

Officers: Scale I to Scale V

PromotionWritten Test ChannelNormal Channel
JMG Scale I → MMG Scale II3 years in the present scale; CAIIB mandatory; online test conducted by IBPS5 years in the present scale (one year less for CAIIB holders)
MMG Scale II → MMG Scale III
MMG Scale III → SMG Scale IV
SMG Scale IV → SMG Scale V

Several conditions apply on top of the minimum years:

  • Computer test: for Scale IV and Scale V, officers must pass a Computer Literacy & Computer Knowledge (CLCK) test. Anyone who has passed it before doesn’t need to sit it again.
  • Branch experience for Scale V: only Scale IV officers with at least five years in branches can apply.
  • Appraisals: they must be up to date for the last three years. An officer below the minimum appraisal marks or grade is ineligible.
  • Counting service: suspension, sabbatical and loss-of-pay periods don’t count towards length of service.
  • Interview calls: applying doesn’t guarantee one. The “zone of consideration” depends on the number of vacancies against applications or written-test qualifiers.
  • Pre-promotion training: SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer) and PwBD candidates get a week’s training. Anyone who attends it but then skips the test or interview has the travel and training costs recovered.

The circular doesn’t restate how marks are split between test, appraisal and interview for officers. That is in the Career Path-cum-Promotion Policy, which isn’t public, so we don’t quote it. For comparison, see how PNB, Bank of India and Canara Bank weight these, or the general pattern in the bank promotion chart.

How our courses map to the Central Bank tests

  • Clerk test, 70-mark banking portion: our Clerk → Scale I course covers banking theory and practice, deposits, advances and forex.
  • Clerk test, 15-mark Computer/CBS portion: covered by the course’s IT and Digital Banking chapters.
  • Gaps in the clerk test: Central Bank’s own staff-loan schemes, service conditions and disciplinary rules aren’t in the course, and nor is English.
  • Officers’ Written Test Channel: use the Scale I → II or Scale II → III course for your step. Note that CAIIB is a precondition for this channel, so clearing it opens both the 3-year route and the one-year relaxation on the Normal Channel.
