JAIIB Passing Marks 2026 — Minimum Marks, Pass Criteria & Grade Rules

Last updated by BankersClub on May 19, 2026

Quick Answer

To pass JAIIB you need 50 out of 100 in each paper (standard route) — OR — 45 out of 100 in every paper + 200 out of 400 total in one sitting (aggregate route). 4 papers, 400 total marks. No negative marking. 5 attempts or 3 years allowed.

Grade Per Paper Total (out of 400) Condition
Standard Pass 50/100 in each paper Any total (if all 4 papers ≥ 50) Papers can be cleared in different attempts
Aggregate Pass 45/100 in every paper 200/400 minimum Must appear in all 4 papers in one attempt
First Class Pass all 4 papers 240/400 (60%+) First physical attempt only
First Class with Distinction 60/100 in every paper 280/400 (70%+) First physical attempt only

JAIIB has 4 compulsory papers — IE & IFS, PPB, AFM, and RBWM — each carrying 100 marks. Total marks: 400. Every paper is 100 MCQs in 2 hours, conducted as an online CBT exam at IIBF-authorised centres. There is no negative marking.

There are two separate routes to pass JAIIB. Most coaching sites mention only one and confuse candidates. Here is exactly how each route works.

What is the Standard Pass Mark for JAIIB?

Under the standard route, you need a minimum of 50 marks out of 100 in each paper. The four papers can be cleared in different attempts — you do not have to pass all four in one sitting.

So if you clear IE & IFS and PPB in Attempt 1, you only re-appear for AFM and RBWM in Attempt 2. Credits for passed papers carry forward within the 5-attempt / 3-year window.

Standard Pass Rule (Official, verbatim from IIBF Rules & Syllabus 2026):
“Minimum marks for pass in the subject is 50 out of 100.”

Can You Pass JAIIB with 45 Marks? — The Aggregate Route Explained

Yes — but only under specific conditions. The aggregate pass route allows a candidate who scores below 50 in some papers to still pass, provided every single condition below is met:

  • You score at least 45 out of 100 in every paper — no paper below 45
  • Your total across all 4 papers is at least 200 out of 400 (50% aggregate)
  • You appeared in all 4 papers in the same attempt (one sitting/session)
Aggregate Pass Rule (Official, verbatim from IIBF Rules & Syllabus 2026):
“Candidates securing at least 45 marks in each subject with an aggregate of 50% marks in all subjects of the examination in a single attempt will also be declared as having completed the Examination.”

The aggregate route is an alternative, not an addition. If you are re-appearing in only 2 or 3 papers (having already passed the others), this route is not available — you need 50 in each of those papers.

Aggregate Route — Pass or Fail? Real Scenarios

IE&IFS PPB AFM RBWM Total Result Why
52555153 211 PASS All ≥ 50 (standard route)
45555555 210 PASS All ≥ 45 + total ≥ 200 (aggregate route)
45454545 180 FAIL Total below 200 (aggregate route fails)
44606060 224 FAIL One paper below 45 — disqualified from aggregate route
49494949 196 FAIL Below 50 standard + total below 200 aggregate
47525550 204 PASS All ≥ 45 + total ≥ 200 (aggregate route)

JAIIB First Class — Passing Marks

To earn First Class in JAIIB, you need:

  • 60% or more aggregate — that is 240 out of 400 or higher
  • You must pass all 4 papers
  • This must be achieved in your first physical attempt (see below for what this means)

JAIIB First Class with Distinction — Passing Marks

To earn First Class with Distinction:

  • 70% or more aggregate — that is 280 out of 400 or higher
  • 60 or more marks in every single paper — no paper below 60
  • Must be achieved in your first physical attempt

Distinction is rare — it requires both a high aggregate and a high floor per paper. Scoring 75, 80, 60, 64 = 279 total is not enough (below 280). Scoring 70, 70, 70, 70 = 280 with all papers at exactly 70 qualifies.

What is “First Physical Attempt” in JAIIB?

This is one of the most misunderstood rules in JAIIB. “First physical attempt” means you have never previously appeared for any JAIIB subject in any prior session.

Official IIBF definition (verbatim):
“The Institute will consider the first physical attempt of the candidate at the examination as the first attempt for awarding class. In other words, the candidate should not have attempted any of the subject/s pertaining to the concerned examination any time in the past and has to pass all the subjects as per the passing criteria.”

What this means in practice:

  • If you appeared for even one JAIIB paper in a previous session, your current attempt is not a first physical attempt — you cannot earn First Class or Distinction
  • If you registered but were absent in May 2025 and then appear in November 2025, November 2025 counts as your first physical attempt (you did not actually sit the exam before)
  • Candidates who re-enrol after exhausting all 5 attempts are permanently capped at Pass Class — no First Class or Distinction is possible on re-enrolment

JAIIB Passing Marks in Second, Third and Later Attempts

The passing thresholds do not change between attempts. In your second, third, fourth or fifth attempt:

  • You still need 50/100 per paper (standard route) for papers you are re-appearing in
  • If you are re-appearing in only some papers (having passed the others earlier), the aggregate route is not available — you must score 50 in each paper you are sitting
  • The aggregate route (45 per paper + 200 total) is available only when you appear in all 4 papers in one session
  • You can only earn Pass Class — First Class and Distinction are no longer possible after the first physical attempt

Attempts Allowed and Time Limit in JAIIB

JAIIB allows a maximum of 5 attempts within a 3-year window from the date of first registration — whichever limit is reached first.

Rule Detail
Maximum attempts 5 attempts
Time limit 3 years from date of first registration
Which limit applies? Whichever is reached first
Does absent registration count as an attempt? YES — attempts are counted from application date, not appearance date
Do attempts need to be consecutive? No — you can skip sessions
Do credits carry forward between attempts? Yes — passed papers retained within the time limit
What if I exhaust all attempts / 3 years? Must re-enrol fresh — all previous credits forfeited

JAIIB exams are held twice a year (May and November). Over 3 years, there are 6 sessions — but you get a maximum of 5 attempts, so you can afford to skip one session without losing your window.

Warning: If you register for an attempt but do not appear on the exam day, that registration still counts as one of your 5 attempts. Do not register unless you intend to appear.

Can You Carry Forward Passed Papers in JAIIB?

Yes. If you pass 2 papers in one attempt and fail 2, you carry forward the 2 passed papers. In your next attempt, you only re-appear for the 2 failed papers. This carry-forward remains valid as long as your overall time limit (5 attempts / 3 years) has not expired.

There is no separate paper-level validity — paper credits expire only when the overall time limit expires. If you exhaust the time limit and must re-enrol, all credits are forfeited and you start from scratch.

Does JAIIB Have Negative Marking?

No. JAIIB has no negative marking. Attempt every question — a wrong answer costs nothing.

This is worth clarifying because the original August 2022 revised syllabus notice proposed negative marking at 25% per wrong answer. IIBF reversed this decision by a January 4, 2023 notice, deferring implementation indefinitely. The current official Rules & Syllabus 2026 document explicitly states: “There will be no negative marking for wrong answers.”

Some coaching websites still reproduce the old August 2022 notice and incorrectly claim negative marking applies. It does not. The correct rule is confirmed in the IIBF official document and the January 2023 deferral notice.

Are Grace Marks Given in JAIIB?

No grace marks are given in JAIIB. IIBF’s online CBT evaluation is automated — there is no provision for manual grace marks.

The only exception: if a question is officially found to be erroneous or ambiguous after the exam, IIBF may award marks for that question to all eligible candidates. This is a question-cancellation mechanism, not a grace-marks provision, and it applies uniformly — not on request.

What Happens if You Score 49 — Pass or Fail?

A score of 49 in any paper means:

  • Fail under the standard route — 49 is below the 50-mark minimum
  • Eligible for the aggregate route — 49 is above 45, so this paper does not disqualify you from the aggregate route, provided you appeared in all 4 papers in one sitting and your total is 200 or more

Example: Scores of 49, 52, 52, 52 = 205 total. All papers ≥ 45. Total ≥ 200. All 4 papers in one attempt. Result: Pass (aggregate route).

Old Syllabus vs New Syllabus — Did Passing Marks Change?

The passing thresholds (50/100 per paper standard, or 45/100 + 200 aggregate) have not changed with the 2023 syllabus revision. What changed was the number of papers and the attempt/time limit:

Aspect Old Syllabus (before May 2023) New Syllabus (May 2023 onward)
Papers 3 papers (PPB, AFB, LRAB) 4 papers (IE&IFS, PPB, AFM, RBWM)
Total marks 300 400
Standard pass per paper 50/100 (unchanged) 50/100 (unchanged)
Aggregate route per paper 45/100 45/100 (unchanged)
Aggregate route total 150/300 (50%) 200/400 (50%)
First Class 180/300 (60%) 240/400 (60%)
Distinction 210/300 (70%) + 60/100 per paper 280/400 (70%) + 60/100 per paper
Attempts / Time limit 4 attempts / 2 years 5 attempts / 3 years (more generous)

What is the Benefit of Passing JAIIB?

Passing JAIIB earns bank employees one additional increment on their basic pay — approximately ₹2,000 per month plus applicable DA and allowances at Scale I levels. This increment is permanent and compounds through all future bipartite wage revisions.

JAIIB is also a mandatory eligibility criterion for promotion to Scale II in most public sector banks. Clearing it early (first or second attempt) gives you a head start on promotion eligibility compared to colleagues who defer it.

Resources to Help You Clear JAIIB

What is the minimum passing mark for JAIIB?

The minimum passing mark for JAIIB is 50 out of 100 in each paper under the standard route. Alternatively, if you appear in all 4 papers in one attempt, scoring at least 45 in each paper with a total of 200 or more out of 400 also qualifies as a pass (aggregate route). There are 4 papers and no negative marking.

Can I pass JAIIB with 45 marks in a paper?

Yes, but only if you appeared in all 4 papers in the same sitting, every paper is 45 or above, and your combined total is 200 or more out of 400. If you are re-appearing in only one or two papers, you need 50 in each of those papers — the aggregate route is not available.

What is the passing marks for JAIIB in the second attempt?

The passing marks do not change in the second, third or any subsequent attempt. You still need 50 per paper (standard route) or 45 per paper + 200/400 aggregate if appearing in all 4 papers in one sitting. However, if you are re-appearing in only some papers (having passed others earlier), you must score 50 in each paper you are re-taking — the aggregate route requires all 4 papers in one attempt.

How many attempts are allowed in JAIIB?

JAIIB allows a maximum of 5 attempts within a 3-year window from the date of first registration — whichever limit is reached first. Registering for an exam but not appearing still counts as one attempt. Passed papers carry forward within this window. After exhausting all attempts or the 3-year limit, you must re-enrol and all previously earned credits are forfeited.

Does JAIIB have negative marking?

No. JAIIB has no negative marking. The original 2022 revised syllabus proposed negative marking at 25%, but IIBF deferred this by a January 2023 notice and the current official Rules & Syllabus 2026 explicitly confirms no negative marking. Attempt all 100 questions in every paper — wrong answers do not reduce your score.

What is the passing mark for JAIIB First Class?

To earn First Class in JAIIB, you need 60% or more aggregate — that is 240 out of 400 marks or higher — while passing all 4 papers, and this must be achieved in your first physical attempt (the very first time you appear for any JAIIB subject).

What is the passing mark for JAIIB Distinction?

To earn First Class with Distinction, you need 70% or more aggregate (280 out of 400 or higher) AND a minimum of 60 marks in every individual paper. Both conditions must be met simultaneously in your first physical attempt.

What happens if I score 49 in a JAIIB paper?

A score of 49 fails under the standard route (which requires 50). However, 49 is above the 45-mark floor for the aggregate route. So if you appeared in all 4 papers in one sitting and every paper is 45 or above and your total is 200 or more, you still pass — a 49 in one paper does not disqualify you from the aggregate route.

Are grace marks given in JAIIB?

No grace marks are given in JAIIB. IIBF’s evaluation is fully automated. The only exception is if a question is officially found to be erroneous — in that case, marks may be awarded to all eligible candidates for that specific question. This is not grace marks; it is question cancellation and applies uniformly.

If I register for JAIIB but don’t appear, does it count as an attempt?

Yes. IIBF counts attempts from the date of application, not the date of appearance. If you register for an exam session and do not appear on the day, that registration is counted as one of your 5 permitted attempts. Do not register unless you plan to appear.
