Viral Acharya: New RBI Deputy Governor

Dr. Viral V. Acharya has been appointed as new Deputy Governor of RBI, who will join on January 20, 2017. Currently Dr. Acharya is C.V. Starr Professor of Economics, Department of Finance, New York University – Stern School of Business.

1974 born Economist Dr. Acharya has interest in singing and poetry (which you can guess from the pic). The new RBI Deputy Governor has composed at least 10 songs including Yadon Ke Silsele and Kya Yeh Wohi Phir Raat Hai.

Mr. Acharya has once described himself as ‘Poor Man’s Raghuram Rajan’ (on a lighter note).

Dr. Acharya is an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) alumnus (B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering) and President of India Gold Medalist for the highest GPA and best academic and overall proficiency. He did his Ph.D. Finance from School of Business, New York University. 

As Deputy Governor, Dr Acharya will look after the Monetary Policy and Research cluster.

He has 26 awards in his name including The 2014 TCFA (The Chinese Finance Association) Award for the Best Paper on Global Financial Markets.

He is a Member of the Advisory Council of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Academy and holds position in various international organisations in advisory roles.

Dr. Acharya has authored several Research Papers and also co-authored two papers with Dr. Raghuram Rajan. 

His areas of interest include  Banking, Corporate Finance, Asset Pricing, Valuation and International Finance.
